01 — Texas at a Glance

Texas, by the numbers.

Texas was so large in 1947 it got four area codes at once: 214 for Dallas, 713 for Houston, 512 for Austin, and 915 for El Paso.

Each territory split repeatedly over the decades: 817 split from 915 for Fort Worth in 1954, and later 210 (San Antonio), 281/409 (Houston area), 903/940 (north Texas), and 806 (Panhandle) emerged.

By the late 1990s, splits alone couldn't keep up, so metros added overlays instead: Houston got 281, then 832, then 346 on 713; Dallas got 972 and 469 on 214.

San Antonio added 830 and 726 on 210; Austin added 737 on 512; Fort Worth added 682 on 817.

With 27 codes in active use, Texas has more area codes than nearly any other state, reflecting decades of growth in its four biggest metros.

Did you know?

Texas received four original area codes in a single year, 1947, more than almost any other state, and has since grown that footprint to 27 codes across the state.
