Why businesses choose a Maryland virtual number

A local Maryland number builds trust before the call connects — and keeps costs at zero.

Maryland residents and businesses are significantly more likely to answer calls from a local area code than out-of-state or toll-free numbers. A local number is the first step to getting the call connected.

01 — Maryland at a Glance

Maryland, by the numbers.

Maryland got a single area code, 301, for the whole state in 1947. In 1991, 410 split off for Baltimore and the Eastern Shore, leaving 301 for the west and DC suburbs.

Rather than split further, Maryland turned to overlays: 240 was added atop 301 in 1997 for Montgomery and Prince George's counties, and 443 was added atop 410 in 1999.

By 2012, both regions needed more numbers, so 667 was added as a second overlay across the 410/443 area.

Maryland now runs two three-code overlay complexes: 301/240 in the west and 410/443/667 in the east.

Did you know?

Maryland runs two separate three-code overlay complexes side by side, so knowing whether a Marylander's number starts with 301/240 or 410/443/667 tells you roughly which half of the state they live in.
