Why businesses choose a California virtual number
A local California number builds trust before the call connects — and keeps costs at zero.
Higher pickup rates in CA
California residents and businesses are significantly more likely to answer calls from a local area code than out-of-state or toll-free numbers. A local number is the first step to getting the call connected.
California, by the numbers.
California launched in 1947 with three area codes: 213 for Los Angeles and the south, 415 for the Bay Area, and 916 for the north and Central Valley.
714 split from 213 in 1951 for San Diego and Orange County; 408 split from 415 in the late 1950s for San Jose. In the 1980s, 619 broke off from 714, and 818 and 310 split from 213.
Through the 1990s, splits kept coming: 916 divided into 209 and 530; 619 gave up 760 and 858; 714 gave up 909 and 951; 408 gave up 831; 415 gave up 650, 510, and 925.
By the 2000s, splitting no longer worked for cellphone-driven growth, so California layered overlay after overlay: 424, 747, 657, 442, 669, and 628 in 2015 atop San Francisco's 415 — giving California the most area codes of any state.
San Francisco's 415 was one of just three area codes covering all of California back in 1947, yet by 2015 the city still needed a second code, 628, stacked right on top of it to keep up with Bay Area growth.
