A local North Carolina number builds trust before the call connects — and keeps costs at zero.

North Carolina residents and businesses are significantly more likely to answer calls from a local area code than out-of-state or toll-free numbers. A local number is the first step to getting the call connected.

01 — North Carolina at a Glance

North Carolina, by the numbers.

North Carolina began in 1947 with one code, 704, statewide. In 1954, 919 split off to cover the eastern and central state, leaving 704 for the west and Charlotte.

336 split from 910 in 1997 for the Piedmont Triad (Greensboro, Winston-Salem), and 828 split from 704 in 1998 for the western mountains around Asheville.

Rather than keep splitting, the state added overlays: 980 atop 704 around Charlotte starting in 2000, and 984 atop 919 in 2012 for the Research Triangle.

The newest addition, 743, overlaid 336 in the Piedmont Triad in 2015. North Carolina now has eight area codes.

Did you know?

North Carolina's original 1947 area code, 704, now covers only the Charlotte region, even though it once served the entire state from the mountains to the coast.
