01 — Ohio at a Glance

Ohio, by the numbers.

Ohio entered the 1947 plan with four codes — 216 (Cleveland), 419 (Toledo), 513 (Cincinnati), 614 (Columbus) — unchanged for nearly 50 years.

The 1990s wireless boom brought overlays instead of splits: 330 over 216 and 937 over 513 in 1996, then 440 and 740 in 1997.

Growth continued into the 2000s: 234 overlaid 330 in 2000, and 567 overlaid 419 in 2002.

Columbus's 2010s boom added 220 over 740 in 2015 and 380 over 614 in 2016, the newest of the state's codes.

Did you know?

Ohio's four original 1947 area codes, 216, 419, 513, and 614, have each spawned at least one overlay, making Ohio one of only a few states where every one of its founding codes has needed reinforcement.
