Florida got one area code, 305, in 1947. Tampa Bay split off as 813 in 1953, and the panhandle and Jacksonville split off as 904 in 1965.
Growth continued: 407 split for Orlando and the east coast in 1988, 954 broke off for Broward County, 352 and 727 split from 904, and 561 split from 407 in 1996.
850 took the panhandle from 904 in 1997, 863 covered central Florida in 1999, and Miami-Dade got its first overlay, 786, in 1998.
More overlays followed: 321 (Space Coast), 386 (north-central), 772 split off in 2002 for the Treasure Coast, and 754 overlaid 954 in 2001. Florida now has 16 codes.
