New York entered the 1947 plan with four codes: 212 for New York City and Long Island, 315 for Syracuse, 716 for Buffalo, and 914 for the lower Hudson Valley.
Long Island split off with 516 in the early 1950s. In 1984, the outer boroughs — Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, Staten Island — split from 212 into 718, leaving 212 just Manhattan.
More city overlays followed: 917 in 1992 (NYC's first), then 646 and 347 in 1999, 929 in 2011, and 332 more recently.
Upstate, 585 split from 716 for Rochester; 607 and 680 serve the Southern Tier; 845 split from 914 for the mid-Hudson Valley; 631 split from 516 for Suffolk County; 838 overlays 845.
New York's newest code, 934, arrived in 2016 as an overlay of 631 on Long Island — bringing the state to nineteen area codes in all.
